As a city battling climate change issues, Warsaw is promoting rainwater retention through a grant programme. The initiative is intended to encourage residents to invest in rainwater harvesting facilities. The aim is both to protect against flooding and to use water resources more efficiently.

Applications for the grant can be submitted from 1 September to 31 March in 2025, giving residents plenty of time to plan and implement their projects. It is important to apply on time, as the application is on a first-come, first-served basis and the funding pool is limited.


The programme provides funding of up to 80% of eligible costs, which allows for a significant reduction in investment expenses. The maximum amount of the grant is PLN 4,000 for individuals and PLN 10,000 for housing communities, cooperatives and other entities not included in the public finance sector. This support can significantly reduce the cost of installing rainwater harvesting and storage systems.

The grant is aimed at a wide range of recipients. Individuals, entrepreneurs as well as housing communities and cooperatives can benefit from it . In addition, non-financial institutions such as foundations or associations also have the opportunity to apply for financial support for water retention projects. This programme is therefore available to almost anyone who wants to contribute to environmental protection and save on water costs at the same time.

Eligible costs that can be covered by the subsidy mainly include expenses related to the purchase and installation of rainwater retention and utilisation facilities. In practice, these may include rainwater tanks, drainage systems, pumps, filters and other elements necessary for the proper functioning of the installation. It is important that the investment is carried out in accordance with the programme, which means that the expenditure must be documented and in accordance with the grant regulations.


The subsidy programme for water retention in Warsaw is an excellent example of how local authorities can support pro-environmental activities among their residents. Through financial support, the city not only promotes the sustainable management of water resources, but also helps to reduce property maintenance costs, which in the long term benefits both the environment and the wallets of Warsaw residents.
